Today’s topic to discuss: Remember when the Mexican Airforce was relevant?

Kinja'd!!!

I guess that the acronym FAM will make it relevant amongst my peoples, the millenials, who have an unexplicable love for the word “FAM”

If you’re between Texas and Panama, we’ve got your back. And also maybe if you have oil and your name isn’t Venezuela.

(Pretty sure this is verbatim from a State Department document)

The P-47 was a beast. You really get a sense of scale from the pilot’s head.

Oh Venezuela, it’s the only country that sparks upon me a visceral disgust.

I know many Venezuelans, the ones lucky to leave... somedays I wished Venezuela was invaded by their neighbors...lately we’ve becomed so critical of them that if it wasn’t for the drug wars I bet we would starting to act as some sort of Latin American USA!

Yes... it was quite nice... but then the Mustang came and it got ALL of the credit.

My step mom is from Venezuela. My great aunt and her family is still there. Many of the my family members are going back to Spain or still trying to back to Spain.

Related to the post: I don’t remember when the Mexican Air Force was relevant. I’ll go look up the history of the Mexican Air Force.

The Germans sunk two of our oil tankers so we declared war on Japan, which meant that the Mexican Airforce saw action in the pacific alongside the Americans... it was more of a formality than an actual deployment but meh... we got to play with P-47 and maybe even p-51 so that’s good.

Yeah, most of the Venezuelan’s I know are just happy to have left that godawful place... right now we’re worried that their government is trying to infiltrate our elections... a bit like Russia and the US... which is kind of very fucking scary!

If anything, there’s also a good chance Russians and American deplorables want to meddle in your elections (for destabilization or profit).

I don’t. It certainly isn’t now. They retired the last of their fighters in 2016: http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/5261/the-mexican-air-force-no-longer-has-any-fighter-aircraft-in-its-inventory

Even before then, 10 F-5s is not so impressive. The US military has somewhere around 40, just for training against (plus hundreds of related, but less capable T-38 trainer).

The Trump like candidate was actually endorsed by the Venezuelan gov... They even gave him.money.

In most foreign policy discussion most americans agree that they want a PAN or PRI president handling NAFTA’s renegociation and not Andres Manuel.... The Venezuelan guy...

And Russians I mean... Sure... Maybe.. I think Peña is friends with Putin but to be honest Peña is friends with whomever speaks with him

In terms of being full of hopeless rhetoric, there’s a lot in common with DOTS and Chavez/Maduro.

If Russia can destabilize Mexico in a way that causes headaches in the US, it will make an attempt. If you have a politico with mindless guillotine-fodder sons who meet with apparatchiks, and a campaign manager who is a money launderer on the dole of Putin-supporting criminals, beware.

“Not being able to organically supply rudimentary air sovereignty capabilities is a hallmark of a failing state as much as anything else, especially for a country in the western hemisphere and the physical size of Mexico.”

Oh settle down with that wording Mr. Military man.

Our air force is certainly understaffed, but Mexico built alliances around the world that back us up maybe even better than an airforce! Again, we probably need new planes (and buying Su-22 would be a terrible idea) but it’s not as if we’re in a state where we wake up one morning fearing it all went to shit because we didn’t have 35 f-5s to defend us....

Yeah, that may have been a bit of an overstatement on his part. Obviously Mexico is not going to compete with the US on air-power, which is fine since it seems pretty unlikely we are going to war (can’t completely rule things out with Trump at the helm), and neither Belize nor Guatemala has any air power to speak of either, so no threat from the south. I suppose some random country could invade by sea, but that seem pretty far-fetched, and lack of treaty obligations notwithstanding, I imagine the US would intervene to prevent a belligerent nation from gaining a foothold in North America.

So, Department of Transportation of the United States?

I kid...

Well... Andres manuel is also full of very dangerous rethoric, he used to be a sensible man, but he’s been enraged by loosing two consecutive presidential elections and now he only talks bullshit... even his campaign coordinator admited that if AMLO doesn’t lie, he won’t get elected.

Plus, our navy is pretty good if we’re talking about a sea invasion.

I don’t think we need airplanes, they’re cool to have but the ones ya’ll build are so expensive, and the ones the russians build are so taboo that we really cannot afford having air superiority unless we made our own fighter jet which is probably nonsensical.

I am never sure what to call him. Dolt45, DOTUS, Dotard, Bonespurs, 45, Agent Orange, etc.

Only talking BS can get you elected. See Murka, 2016.

I don’t know...man... what really makes me unhappy about Andres is that even if he would keep his fans happy, he wouldn’t do anything to help them.

At the bottom of Trump and Obrador’s rhetoric we see poverty.... and that poverty certainly exists and we need to address it, but a billionaire and the former mayor of a very business friendly capital with a string of bad decisions both financially and ethically behind his back aren’t going to address it.

I think for a country like Mexico, if you were to get new fighters, probably the best thing would be to get the FA-50, which is a light-fighter/jet-trainer built by South Korea, and designed (with Lockheed’s input) to be sort of a baby F-16:

Kinja'd!!!

It’s significantly cheaper to buy and operate than other non-light options (though obviously still not super cheap). Basically occupies the same niche the F-5 did.

Same thing north of the border - the populist preaches that he’s about people, but he wouldn’t actually lift a finger to help them. And those who fell for it the hardest will benefit the least. If anything, the socio-economic chasm in both places will only widen.

Well, 30M is nothing compared to the f-22, or the f-35... not that these could hold a candle to those.

I think Mexico should probably focus on ground-to-air defenses and a good fleet of unmanned reconnaissance aircraft rater than having fighter jets

If we were crazy we could build a protective belt of low speed, high altitude recon planes that had enough fuel (with solar panels probably) to fly weeks at a time... maybe 1 plane every 1500km would serve us right, these planes could be communicated with the ground to air defenses which would be cheaper than something of the likes of an f-35... but f-35 aren’t defense planes, those are invasion planes... and the Mexican Air Force’s focus should be defense.

Maybe man, but it’s so wide here that if it got any wider it wouldn’t surprise me if we went through another revolution... I’m genuinely scared and I wished that my fellow Mexicans weren’t so shortsighted and greedy, 50% of our people are poor... and most of the wealth is concentrated on the 14%... this is something that is simply unreasonable... and no one really needs that much money compared to the next man... to think that many are proud that for many years a monopolistic son of a bitch called Carlos Slim was the world’s richest man disgusts me. I’m not a commie by any means! If anything I’m very capitalistic, and capitalism rewards nations with big middle classes because the middle class is the best compromise between good income and big spending, rich people spend way less compared to what they earn, and poor people don’t have money to spend.

You see where I’m headed?

No. But Mexico doesn’t really need to spend a lot on an air force does it? I’d think it’s aircraft needs would be more for internal stuff.

Kinja'd!!! Spanfeller is a twat > Chariotoflove
03/08/2018 at 10:29

Kinja'd!!!1

Well, no, we don’t need planes because our country is not imminently threatened by another nation, most of our threats are internal and for that we mostly need ground, sea, and recon troops. Narcos might be rich and scary but they can’t afford an f-22...yet...

The key to a healthy economy is consumer spending, and the ability to spend at all levels - it is really that simple.

Do people there have the “temporarily embarrassed millionaire” syndrome that continues to hinder progress in Murka?

Kinja'd!!! Spanfeller is a twat > fintail
03/08/2018 at 11:29

Kinja'd!!!0

I think many people here already resigned themselves and know they’ll never be rich, but are so patriotic or proud that they can’t see it through.

A healthy economy is as you describe, but shamefully that type of economy, alike a middle class, is artificial and thus must be regulated to insure it’s existence.

Kinja'd!!! fintail > Spanfeller is a twat

Kinja'd!!!1

I think it is kind of the same way here. Although many, those without any education in economics, think trickle down will enable them to strike it rich, they are proud and patriotic, and tow the line.

Without regulation, it becomes France in 1789, or at best, Dickensian England.

Internal air power is still useful for search and rescue and support of ground/sea law enforcement missions. It’s not just for air to air missions.
